Yes, you read that right, I’m reading again and the reviews are coming in with it.
I actually started the Nemesis book last year, but for one reason or another I didn’t get to finish it, so this month I decided that I had had a really long reading break and that it was time to start reading again. Nemesis was a very good book to start with, because after that one I’m crazy about reading again.
Anyway, instead of giving you a review of the first book (Nemesis) and then the second book (Ally) I’m going to write a review of the duology itself. No it’s not to save time or whatever you might be thinking, it’s just that I read them right after the other and I feel like it’s better if I tell you how I felt about both books that way you can decide if the duology is worth your time or not.
Here is what the books are about:
Princess Sepora of Serubel is the last Forger in all the five kingdoms. The spectorium she creates provides energy for all, but now her father has found a way to weaponize it, and his intentions to incite war force her to flee his grasp. She escapes across enemy lines into the kingdom of Theoria, but her plans to hide are thwarted when she is captured and placed in the young king’s servitude.
Tarik has just taken over rulership of Theoria, and must now face a new plague sweeping through his kingdom and killing his citizens. The last thing he needs is a troublesome servant vying for his attention. But Mistress Sepora will not be ignored. When the two finally meet face-to-face, they form an unlikely bond that complicates life in ways neither of them could have imagined.
Sepora’s gift may be able to save Tarik’s kingdom. But should she risk exposing herself and her growing feelings for her nemesis?
Princess Sepora of Serubel and King Tarik of Theoria have formed an uneasy truce between their kingdoms since the deadly plague began to rip through Theoria. Since their feelings for each other are entangled in politics and power, they must use their own trusted resources to find common ground.
But when traitors with powerful allies arise from unexpected places, Tarik and Sepora face challenges that will change both of their kingdoms forever. Will they learn whom to trust—including each other—in time to save their kingdoms, their relationship and even their lives?
It all sounds pretty epic right?
Well it was. At least I thought it was.
But sadly the duology itself got a 3.5 out 5 stars in my review book.
I’ll start by saying that I really loved Nemesis, Nemesis itself got a 4 star review on Goodreads because I really like the world building, the main conflict and how things developed, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Having the books in dual POV also helped a lot because, it felt to me that we were getting the whole story, not just the way a character saw it.
The best part of Nemesis, was the conflict, how it started and how it developed through the chapters. Also the romance, I love romance and I love it when it’s important, but not the main deal of it all. Granted, Tarik was pretty in love with Sepora and started to base his decisions in a way that would not completely affect her, but he was still objective.
And then the ending of it was amazing. It was a cliffhanger that I was definitely not expecting and that didn’t feel like too big of a cliffhanger. A real puzzle I guess.
Then came Ally, I was really happy I didn’t have to wait at all to read the second book, because if I had read Nemesis last year I would have definitely waited for months to read the second book. Anyhow, Ally was good, but it felt worlds away from Nemesis for some reason. For like the first half of the book nothing was really happening, just that Sepora and Tarik didn’t trust each other and instead of talking about their doubts they decided to ignored each other and keep on doubting the real motives for anything either of them did.
But after the first half things got interesting, with the plot twist and what happened to Sepora (not going to say what happened because that is a spoiler!). Still I feel like the story was lacking something, I don’t know for sure what it was, if it was the stubbornness of the characters or how ridiculous some of the things developed.
All in all, I enjoyed the ending, even though it got 3 stars on GoodReads, it was sweet and it did wrap up all the loose ends, not the way I would have wanted, but it did. The very last chapter was very sweet and when a story leaves you with a smile on your face, I feel like that is a good way to end it.
In conclusion, I would definitely recommend this story, because it’s something different and refreshing, and most of all an easy read. So if you are looking for something different and easy to read, you should for sure check out the Nemesis duology.
Have you guys read it?
