review 1: I really enjoyed this book. I loved the message of women needing and helping each other no matter our backgrounds, race, or income level. My one main gripe with this book is that I felt like it was a bit much on the man-hating side. It wasn't a strong message through the entire story, but I hated the bits that were there. I have a strong feminist streak, but I don't feel like we have to put men down to rise up. Other than that, I really loved this story and the truthfulness to the characters.
review 2: This book has been on several recommended reading lists of mine for awhile and I finally got around to reading it when I saw it on the recommended reading shelf at the library. It was a very entertaining read about a young girl, Ceecee, who spends the early years
... more of her life as her psychotic mother's rational support. It is a lot of responsibility. Her mother has difficulty connecting with reality - she is lost in the world of her teenage triumph as the Vidalia Onion Queen. As embarrassing as she is, Ceecee still maintains a tremendous amount of love and affection for her mother. Her father has abandoned them and Ceecee is left to cope. When her mother is hit and killed by a truck, Ceecee's greataunt Tootie comes to her rescue. Ceecee leaves Ohio and moves to Savannah where she finds redemption in Tootie's largely female world. less
