Review:
So, continuing my spooky October theme, I’m going to review a novella set in a world of monsters, angels and humans, but which focuses on the first date of a puppeteer and a violinist.
Zuzana and Mik made their debuts in Laini’s other books in the Daughter of Smoke & Bone series, and A Night of Cake and Puppets serves as book 2.5. After the events of the last book, Kaoru is off trying to get wishes, and Zuzana is left in Prague, with 5 scuppies. She’s had a crush on Mik for a while and tonight is the night she’s going to make magic happen and win the guy.
The book is told from the point of view of both Zuzana and Mik, alternating between them at relevant points in the story. From the moment you peak beneath the dustcover of the book, you see what a magical journey this book will be. There are beautiful illustrations throughout the book which add some humour, especially combined with Zuzana’s already sarcastic narration. Speaking of narration, muy favourite thing may be the difference in narration between Mik and Zuzanna’s chapters.
Thanks to the location of the story and the references to magic, puppets and quests, the whole thing reads like a cross between a meet-cute story and a fairytale. There were a number of times I gushed at the cute lines between the two, but it contrasted nicely with the hilarious illustrations and Zuzanna’s sarcastic voice.
