review 1: Within in the past year I've come back to reading the stories of Mike Mignola. The first book back was Joe Golem and the Drowning City he wrote with Christopher Golden and I really enjoyed that one. The next was about the puppet catechism and I've been reading the Abe Sapien comic series started last year. I wanted to pick up this title on the new arc that was just released but I thought it would be best to start from the beginning. This was a really good story that set the mood for who Henry Baltimore is as a character. I think that both Mignola and Golden created a person who has gone through hell and will continue to do so in the following volumes. I ordered a book that came out before the comic series started that delves deeper into his origin. I will continue to keep ... moreup with this story. A\
review 2: I actually really enjoyed this book after picking it up on a whim while scouring the graphic novel section of my local library. The story is engrossing and really captures your interest as it sets the scene for Baltimore's quest hunting vampires across the post World War I vampire apocalypse globe. While it did take a little while for me to warm to the characters, Baltimore in particular, I did find that once his purpose was established and his story told I could connect with him more and as a result become more involved and engrossed in the story. The illustrations were superb and really captured the essence of the story, changing in colour and light as the story required. And I particularly liked some of the sound effects, which is a part of graphic novels that is often forgotten but the shhhhuuunk of a vampire head being removed echoing through my brain was spot on and really brought something extra to the book. Can't wait to carry on with this series. less

Okay, probably 4.5 stars. Not as much fun as Hellboy, but pretty darn good!
