Ah Trilogies, they’ve done great things for us but only when it comes to the written word. Lord of the Rings, The Hunger Games, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Dark Materials, the list goes one. Novel trilogies have a way of building a story and an apogee that leaves one with little to be desired. The legacy of trilogies in the film industry are ones that are generally a disaster. The Godfather, Spider-Man, The Matrix, Star Wars Ep 1-3, Look Who’s Talking, The Addams Family, A Christmas Story. Some of those third movies are so bad you probably didn’t even know there was a third movie! Just so you know there is a A Christmas Story, My Summer Story, and A Christmas Story 2. That series is so terrible, My Summer Story is sometimes billed as It Runs in the Family, it’s one of those movies I loved as a kid but that’s a story for another time.
Pitch Perfect 3 once again brings us back to Beca, Fat Amy and the rest of the Bella’s as we intrude on their sad, after college lives. I yearn for the day when I cannot relate to theses girls so much. Once again Beca’s life isn’t going well but a reunion with the Bella’s helps to make it better. This reunion leads to a misunderstanding which leads to the ladies getting back together to travel with the USO tour entertaining the troops. Of course it wouldn’t be Pitch Perfect without some kind of competition. The best USO group/performer gets to open for the one and only DJ Khalid. Get ready for a non surprise ending without any dignity.
Despite the films lack of great numbers, surprise action sequences, and cheesy USO outfits, I actually enjoyed this movie. The jokes aren’t any better than the previous features but I still laughed. Even though I thought the Fat Amy secret agent section was not needed whatsoever, a quiet snicker could still be heard from my seat. The fact that this movie decided no one would take it seriously so they shouldn’t either, made the movie just a smidge more enjoyable. All in all I had fun but I’m glad it’s the last time the “Pitches” will be back.
