We all love rooting for the underdog! Here are a few books with characters, seemingly powerless, who overcome through hard work, resourcefulness, and sheer determination:
What is it? Ghost (Track 1), by Jason Reynolds.
Who is it for? Fifth graders (and strong fourth grade readers) through middle school (book level 4.6)
Why should I read it? Castle Cranshaw (aka Ghost) is a seventh grade boy who first learned he was a fast runner when he and his mother had to run from their home in terror while being chased by his abusive father. By chance, Ghost ends up on a track team being coached by a former Olympian who recognizes his potential. In order to stay on the team, Ghost has to stay out of trouble. You will keep turning the pages of this book hoping, and rooting, for him to make it to that first race. This is the first book in a series of four. National Book Award Finalist
What is it? The Ravenmaster’s Secret, by Elvira Woodruff
Who is it for? Fifth graders through middle school (guided reading level U; book level 5.2)
Why should I read it? It’s 1775 and eleven year old Maddy, a Scottish Rebel’s daughter, is being held prisoner in the Tower of London. You’ll love this suspenseful adventure book about an escape from the Tower of London- especially since it won’t be soldiers or knights who will try to rescue Maddy. Instead, it will be up to a poor orphan (who has the miserable fate of being a servant to the town rat catcher), the Ravenmaster’s son, and Maddy herself to find a way to do the impossible.
What is it? Savvy, by Ingrid Law
Who is it for? Fifth grade level through middle school (guided reading level U; lexile 1070)
Why should I read it? In Law’s novel, the children in the Beaumont family mysteriously receive a “savvy” (a unique ability) on their thirteenth birthday. The book begins when Mibs is about to turn thirteen and find out what her savvy is. One of her brothers can create a storm if he stands near water, another can control electricity. Needless to say, Mibs has some anxiety about what her savvy will be. A fantasy novel that is part mystery (just what is Mibs’ savvy?), part road-trip adventure, and part family drama. Law’s theme of learning to listen to that one true voice inside you is one of the best things about it. (Newbery Honor Book)
