The focus of my blog is to review book series and not individual novels. But writers are going to continue writing novels within a series even after I have done my review, so I plan on reviewing the individual novels as they come into circulation. Matthew Mather along with co-author Lucas Bale has just recently added book #3, Resistance to the Nomad series.
For some reason I was under the impression that Matthew Mather was not planning to continue the Nomad series after Sanctuary, but I am pleased to find out that I am wrong. Not only is the series continuing with this recent addition, Resistance, but there will be a fourth book coming out in March entitled Destiny. Mather has decided to co-author these latest two additions with science fiction writer Lucas Bale.
Resistance takes off where Sanctuary ended with Jessica Rollins waking up in a complex known as sanctuary. Up to this point, planet Earth has suffered catastrophically after two rotating black holes known as Nomad passed through the solar system. Getting to sanctuary was not pretty and Rollins along with her cohorts, which includes Rollins’ love interest Giovanni Ruspoli and his nephew Hector, suffered incredible hardships. In Resistance, it turns out that Sanctuary is not a sanctuary and Rollins and her companions are once again having to face the elements. This time they are accompanied by billionaire Ufuk Erdogmus, who seems to have an agenda, and Rollins doesn’t know if she can trust him.
For the most part, Resistance, is full of action and intrigue, but during the time Rollins and her merry band of followers spent in Libya seem to go a bit slow for me. Oh sure, Rollins had to face people who were out to kill her and her friends and she didn’t trust anybody especially Ufuk Erdogmus. It’s just that there didn’t seem to be a cohesive goal in actually doing anything until the town of Al-Jawf was attacked and Rollins and her team had to escape. After that, the rest of the story moved along quickly and ended with an exciting cliffhanger.
Overall, I enjoyed Resistance with the exception of Erdogmus’s first name Ufuk. I know that Ufuk is an honorable Turkish name but every time I see Ufuk, I keep thinking about the poor middle school kid that has been endowed with this name and the ability of his English speaking classmates to make it into something more deplorable. So why out of the hundreds of names that Mather could choose from, he had to choose Ufuk? Why?
Nonetheless, I am looking forward to reading Destiny and see if Rollins and planet Earth survive.
