review 1: I wish I didn't love this book because romance novels in general embarass me, but Tessa Dare provided everything I hoped for in my first romance novel in 10 years. No cheap plot based on miscommunication or stubbornness that could be solved in a conversation that uses actual full sentences. Instead, this novel is full of characters with real goals (publish a scientific discovery, achieve financial independence) and troubles (PTSD, poverty, constricting gender roles). Even more impressive, the characters are a but meta-cognitive; at one point, Minerva pauses and realizes she is succumbing to some pressure to "save" Colin when that is not her job. The humor, fast paced plot, steamy love scenes, and witty dialogue leaves every other romance I have read in the DUST. I crave a ... moreromance novel approximately three times a year. When that craving hits, I will return to Minerva, Colin, and FRANCINE!
review 2: 4/5; 4 stars; A-This book was just as good on audio as it had been last year when I read it. Carolyn Morris was a new to me narrator and I enjoyed her way of telling the story. I think this book is a really fun, light weight, historical romance that offers hours of entertainment. This quote from close to the end of the book just cracked me up and its a good example of the dry and sarcastic humor throughout the book. Minerva and Colin have finally arrived at the Geological society symposium in Edinburgh but are having trouble getting past the doorman because woman are not allowed:“But, my lord, unmarried women cannot attend as guests. It’s not proper.”“For the love of ammonites, man! That’s just stupid. Why on earth would the Society need to protect unmarried women from bone-dry lectures regarding soil composition? Do your members find themselves whipped into some sort of dusty frenzy, from which no delicate lass would be safe?”Mr. Barrington tugged on his coat. “Sometimes debate does get heated.” less

Just what I would expect from a Tessa Dare novel- sweet, sexy, witty and thoughtfully written.
