This book isn’t my typical choice but it was cheap and the blurb intrigued me. I hadn’t really heard much about it so the information on the book was all I had to follow. It sounded kind of dark and heart-wrenching and a mysterious, twisted YA novel. It was all of that, don’t get me wrong. I just don’t think it was a great version of any single one of those, so it was just mediocre overall.
Near the end I was really getting into it, the pace of the story finally picked up after a slow build up of twist and turns that left the reader feeling lost and disinterested. The plot switches up halfway through which was unexpected but not an amazing plot-twist considering it then rendered the blurb completely incorrect. So yeah, by the end – when I finally knew what the real story was – it was getting interesting.
Then we get to the ending. Oh god. I can’t even tell you what happens because it is just that open and ambiguous and not what I personally want from the ending of a novel – especially a novel that seems messy whilst you’re reading it. The ending could have saved it, Delia and June could have ridden off into the sunset but no. The ending was what made me shut the book and proceed to shout at my boyfriend about how many hours I had wasted on the story to not even get a definitive ending.
This may have tainted my perception of the story slightly because I can remember whilst I was reading that I was desperate to know the reality of the situation June was faced with in regards to her ex-best friends sketchy “suicide”. But, it also allowed me to admit that I didn’t enjoy it; I didn’t like any of the characters, they were all weird or too secretive to know at all. Everyone was a suspect and June’s point of view of them kept changing during her ‘investigation’. The story was wild, maybe a little too much, and the character who you were supposed to feel empathy for – Delia, the poor victim – was extremely unlikeable in my opinion and I just didn’t care.
favourite part: when i finished it, closed it, threw it across my bed and screamed about what a waste of time it was.
