review 1: Actually, I loved this book. I've read all of Mr. Carter's fiction and feel his writing has improved immensely. It is much tighter, having necessary detail, but not much more. I felt I knew his main characters without extra information about them. I was wanting a novel that would 'hook' me and this one did. I was not 100% certain who was a culprit and who wasn't until the very end. Believe me, there were enough of them to go around. Given that the main man was a former head of CIA as well as former Defense Secretary, there were plenty of story lines to be developed. Add in a couple of years with a Wall Street firm upon retiring from government and the plot thickens. Throw in a 'fortress' on a Colorado mountain top about 30 miles from the nearest town and 8 miles fr... moreom a little village and all sorts of things are possible. If you are looking for a diversion at the moment, this might be the book for you.
review 2: I didn't think much of this book, despite the high recommendations I had read. The writing is ok, and there's an interesting plot, but...none of it makes sense, and the characters aren't "real". I think the little things help define the characters and set the scene--but the author doesn't seem to have decided what he intends. For example, at one point, the "heroine" says that she's thin because she doesn't find time to eat. Then, she complains inwardly when someone is cooking good, but fattening foods. Later, the same cook is suddenly cooking "health" foods that no one in the house likes. None of this has anything to do with the plotlines, though--just an example of how confusing the author and the book is. less

Had to give up on this one. 125 pages in and I was still waiting for the story to begin.

I enjoyed this book - well written, lots of subplots and a few surprises. A good read!

Slow and boring with lack of compelling story. A book group read I wish I'd skipped.
