review 1: I read a lot of horror novels, but around Halloween I like to read the really bad ones for fun. With a title like The Shuddering, I figured this one would be nice and unbearable, the way I like them. It was not. It was scary and suspenseful and I was dying to know if anyone was going to make it out of the woods alive. Not dying in the sense that hideous creatures were ripping me to shreds, like the characters in the book, but dying in the sense where I couldn't put it down even though I should have been sleeping. Never once did I find myself looking forward to any particularly loathsome characters' deaths like I usually do. The characters and their relationships with each other were real, flawed, and likable. The writing was good, and I was not mentally correcting a bunch ... moreof typos in my head. I found myself wondering if this was not self-published like I originally assumed, but in fact was put out by a publishing house because it was not the expected hot, hilarious mess. (Of course I have been too lazy to check. I must preserve my energy for more horror.) Discovering a book you hoped would be terrible is actually pretty great is the best kind of disappointment. I'm on Amazon right now buying another of Ania Ahlborn's books.
review 2: Meh! Poorly written. Was a bit of a teenage style novel where most of authors efforts were spent on portraying how good looking the group were at the expense of building a credible plot and surroundings. The settings were not described in much detail, so much so that when reading it I was not conjuring up much of the imagery in my head. This is usually the beauty of a novel, transporting the reader through rich and vivid descriptions. It was character focused yet the characters were not fully developed. A big horror fan but I resent paying for this. The end was the best thought up element of this. less

It was a quick read. It had a lot of swearing which I'm not fond of,but I thought the plot was good.
