In the spirit of reading more till 2018, I picked up this book today and it turned out to be my final read of this year. From the minute I read the blurb I was captivated because of all the intrigue the words inspired.
Every nine years a guest is invited to Slade House. Found at the end of a dark, dingy alleyway, this simple black door is what lures visitors. Creeping with supernatural elements, this house is every guest’s last stop. What goes on inside the house? What happens to all these people? Who or what inhabits this ancient house?
If you’re looking for a book that will have your hair standing on end, this is the one for you. It is sure to give you at least a few jump scares in the course of the reading. I think this movie would do well to be adapted to the screen.
The novel spans many decades and as we read Slade House, we encounter a series of interesting characters that evoke our empathy. I especially liked the unique structure of this novel. With each chapter dedicated to one specific episode and one character who does not always re-appear in subsequent chapters. This book was a gripping, fast-paced read. Peppered with dark, gothic elements, this novel is sure to please fans of the genre (gothic fantasy).
There did not seem to be enough explanation of events central to the plot which made it hard to believe and unconvincing at times. Perhaps, had the writer provided more explanation it would have made the novel a more enjoyable read. I also felt that the end of the novel was a bit hasty.
On the whole, it makes for a delightful Halloween read. A good book to pick up if you want a dash of fear, a sprinkle of supernatural to whet your reading appetite.
