review 1: An intriguing plot, fairly well written, pacey and with sprinkling of humour amongst the action, and all set in a stunning location. Sounds like it all should add up to a very good book, right? Well I did enjoy it but it's a bit cliche-ridden, and the events that unfold just get more and more unbelievable as the book progresses. The main irritation for me was that the 'hero' of the story puts Jack Reacher to shame with his ability to survive any mishap and defeat any enemy. Plunging into icy waters on a snow-capped mountain, getting shot, or simply knocked out, he shakes it all off with ease, and while the survival skills of a mountain guide are no surprise, being able to take on armed soldiers, be comfortable with various guns and have the ability to fly a helicopter stre... moretch things just a little far. Still 3* for the entertainment value!
review 2: This was a fun story, but the book was plagued with some cliches and also some really bad mistakes that should have been caught by an editor. There were two that stood out as particularly horrible. "...neatly stacked stones in the shape of a finger. Or a phallic." And then this one: "Wally leaned in close to the ship, his big schnauzer just inches from the protective ice." I'm having a really hard time forgiving transgressions like these. That said, because of some good reviews from authors I enjoy and the fact that I liked the story idea and how some of it played out enough to give a few more of his books a read. I wouldn't say don't read this book, but I would suggest starting with a different one, maybe one written later and more polished, because I don't think this story really shows us what Mr. Rain can do. less
