review 1: I've long regarded the Drood series as 'guilty pleasures' -- usually I find the books incredibly silly, but I can't stop reading them. This book actually takes a step above that, by virtue of making unavailable the Deus Ex Machina that is the Drood armor, and turning it into a legitimate spy/action novel, where Eddie Drood (along with his girlfriend Molly the Witch) goes into the heart of darkness. That said, I still think I'm giving it a higher grade than it actually deserves, because it's better than the rest of the recent series; for a secret agent, Drood can't go very long without talking about being a secret agent with all of his companions (in a place that the narrative stresses quite often is likely to be bugged). For an environment where gambling is the nominal purp... moreose, and many characters don't appear to be much for violence, every single lower-stakes game seemed to involve mayhem.
review 2: Simon R. Green is a prolific writer and the grind of turning out numerous novels can sometimes take away from the quality of the writing. That said, Casino Infernale is top notch. Number 7 in the Secret Histories series, it continues to follow the adventures of Eddie Drood and his wild witch girlfriend, Molly Metcalf. Without giving too much away, Eddie & Molly are tasked to "break the bank" of the Shadow Bank, a nefarious institution secretly financing the dark side of life and its players. In order to do so, they must compete against the major players in a series of games at Casino Infernale. The casino scenes and games are flat-out fun. Roulette takes on a new meaning, games are literally life and death and the protagonists are constantly confronted by traps and near-death experiences. Eddie Drood is also hampered by a new, devastating limitation of his powers. This book is a page-turning, fun read. I would highly recommend it! less
