review 1: Lots of fun! A big thumbs-up. I just finished reading this book to my kids and we really enjoyed the ride. I think the best thing about Fforde is the complete disregard for any kind of structure. You're reading the book and suddenly some completely irrelevant -- and completely hilarious -- detail interrupts the train of thought. The story is about Jennifer Strange, an orphan who has somehow become entrusted with running a company of wizards that devotes most of its energy to such tasks as unstuffing drains. Things get worse when there is a prophecy that the last dragon will be killed within a few days, and things start spiraling out of control. Without giving anything away, I'll just say that the plot moves forward very rapidly, the characters involved are fun and exp... moreertly manipulated, and the story is great. Throw in a random moose entering and exiting the scene every once in a while, and you've got a great fantasy novel!I finished reading this to my kids a few days ago. Needless to say, we picked up the second book of the series and are reading that one right now.
review 2: Fun book with a female main character that gets away with being female without anyone much commenting on it. She's sadly one of few, though she does encounter one or two other interesting female characters in the book. The whimsical nature of the humour is a bit clunky at times and reminds me very, very much of the Thursday Next novels, but since I enjoyed those just as much, I didn't mind so much, even though don't see a lot of difference between Jenny's voice and Thursday's, though Jenny is not romantically involved and does not have a child, of course. Nor a dodo, though she does have a quarkbeast. less

Love the twists at the end, and OMG Ms. Strange has the patients of a saint!

Wonderfully anti-capitalistic - a perfect read during the holiday season.
