“8”opens with the voice Statik’s daughter Harley letting the world know that this is album number “8”, since the world thought that 2015’s “Lucky Seven” would be the DJ/Producer’s final project. The opening track, “Man of the Hour” is butter smooth, funky, and features 2 Chainz and Wiz Khalifa. Run the Jewels provides the verbal exercise over a 007 inspired banger, while they flip lyrics like a gymnast on the track.
“Disrespeckt” is one of the strongest cuts on “8”, in my opinion, which features a posthumous verse from the Queensbridge Warrior — Prodigy (RIP) — who interestingly spits the eyebrow raising line, “you win an Emmy, and an Oscar”, and “okay, we see you just an imposta”. We’re not sure if P is throwing darts in any direction, and we won’t assume anything either. “Nobody Move” with Raekwon, and Royce the 5’9 is an Ali/Foreman punch fest on wax. And will be sure to make heads nod.
With 18 tracks strong, this LP is sure to please the various range of palates of Hip-Hop heads in every region on the culture’s map. Established artist of varying degrees of success, such as The LOX, Billy Danz of M.O.P, and B-Real of Cypress Hill, as well as a slew of the current generation of superstars like Wale, Phil Ade, Joey Bada$$, and Joyner Lucas make solid contributions to the project. The diversity of artists shows the intention to satisfy everyone. So since that’s a DJ’s main purpose, the strategy makes sense.
