The Borden Dispatches
review 1: Pretty good Victorian-era New England Lovecraftian horror novel. The novel is engaging and reads like a speeding bullet. The book is written as a series of journal entries/correspondences. I found this kind of distracting and I thought it actually made the pacing a bit too quick during the scary parts; they weren't particularly scary because more action oriented than suspense. But overall this was a very good novel with an excellent protagonist.
review 2: I was pleasantly surprised by this book, which is something of a Lovecraft/political commentary/steampunk mashup. The characters are incredibly well written; they grow and evolve in the most unexpected ways and you will find yourself constantly re-evaluating your opinion of them as the story progresses. Priest
... more did an excellent job of accurately combining elements of folklore and of classical stories and then creating her own hypothesis for the workings of her plot. Reading this book make me eager to look into the rest of her work, of which there are many well known works of steampunk. less
