Before I start, I want to say that there are spoilers ahead for The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer (the first book only – no spoilers for the second one!) so if you haven’t read the first book, be warned now that spoilers are coming!
Now that that’s out of the way, here we go!
The Evolution of Mara Dyer picks up immediately where The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer left off. Mara used her powers to force someone to shoot her dad’s client, getting her dad shot in the process. Feeling guilty, she goes to a police station to turn herself in for the murders of everyone who has died because of the powers she possesses. While in the police station, she sees Jude alive and panics. In book two, we pick up in a hospital. Mara has been admitted again, because of course, no one believes she’s seen Jude or that he’s alive. No one except for Noah. Mara’s goal now is to pretend everything is fine so her parent’s won’t make her stay at the hospital. Only, when she’s at home, weird things are happing. Things are moved around her room, there’s a dead cat outside of her door, and she receives a note insinuating she’s being watched.
I have to say, while I did really like The Evolution of Mara Dyer, I definitely didn’t like it as much as I liked The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer. That said, I also saw it coming. I read the first book completely thinking Mara was possessed. It fits all of the horror movies about possession I’d seen, and I LOVED that concept…only, that’s not what happened. She wasn’t possessed, she just has the power to kill people with her mind, basically. So then I was a little let down, and moving into the second book, I knew that. I was missing the scary elements and the tension I felt in Unbecoming, which is what I felt like was missing from Evolution.
That said, the last third of the book was incredible. I loved it, and couldn’t read fast enough! I was dying to find out what happened, especially as puzzle pieces started coming together. I bought the third book and have it on my list to read this week, and I can’t wait to see how everything ends.
Overall, I really liked the book, and rated it 4 stars on Goodreads (I rated Unbecoming 5 stars), so I’d still recommend it!
