review 1: This story, told through the eyes and experiences of Hayatt,a 13 year old Palestinian girl, is tender, tragic and humorous all at the same time. She believes that a handful of soil from her grandmother’s home in Jerusalem will save her life. Hayatt and her (male)friend Samy make a dangerous journey through checkpoints and climbing over the wall that divides Israel to get the precious soil. This gives an insightful look, from the Palestinian viewpoint, on how difficult the Palestinian/Israeli conflict is for normal families who are simply trying to live their normal lives.
review 2: This book does a good job transporting kids into the life of a teenage Palestinian girl in the occupied West Bank including both political and cultural information, and interperson
... moreal contemplation. It gave my American kids a perspective and global understanding of a situation they would rarely encounter otherwise. There were some moral issues, especially obedience that required discussion. A good schema-expander, but not a real crowd-pleaser. less
