review 1: Favorite quotes: On teaching a child to read - and I've witnessed this!!"Every day she saw miracles. An unmistakable veil lifted when a kid finally grasped the concept of words on paper and at last the world of books lay before him like the threshold to the universe. Everything about the child's countenance changed."On living in an Assisted Living facility, reflecting my father's sentiments perfectly:"Hey, in a place like this, when everything else has been taken from you, you should be able to get a pathetic cup of coffee if you want one." And he does…frequently!
review 2: It is difficult to categorize this book as it is not a romance. It is somewhat suspensetic, also family oriented. The Janvier family is the pefect family. Amanda has married the perfect ma
... moren. They both have jobs, a nice house, two well behaved kids. (In my opinion too well behaved!Tally who doesn't remember a mother and whom father has made a trip to Poland without saying exactly what he is doing there is left with her grandmother in Arizona. When her grandmother suddenly dies, the only other relative she knows of is her father's sister in San Diego which is the Janvier family. It is not long before Tally realizes the son of the family has big troulbe. Chase had been in a fire at a baby sitter's house when he was four. although he and another child were rescued, a baby girl died. His parents have never spoken of the incident although mom Amanda begins to suspect he remembers more she thought. No amoutn of coaking will get her distant husband Neal to talk to his son. Meanwhile at her job Amanda finds a sympathetic soul, then wonders how can she even think of leaving Neil?Tally and Chase meet two Holocaust survivors in a nursing home whom they interview for a school project. Somehow these meetings have a profound effect on Chase's memories. So does Tally's advice. In the meantime the social worker in Arizona insists if they don't hear from Tally's father soon, she will have to go through the legal system rather than continuing to stay with her aunt and uncle. This is a heart warming book. The end is very surprising, entirely unexpected. less
