The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo | Review

This book should have been on my 2017 favorite books of the year list. Unfortunately I read it a few days after I had already posted the list and I felt all the regrets!

The Language of Thorns is a collection of short stories by Leigh Bardugo. A few of her stories are set in her already established Grisha universe, but some of them are just twists of classic fairy and folk tales.

I haven’t read any of Leigh Bardugo’s other books, which will be remedied as soon as possible because I need more of her writing in my life. I absolutely loved these stories. After reading the very first one, I was immediately sold on this book and bought my own copy.

I won’t spoil any of the stories, but something I really loved about them is that they didn’t have traditional happy endings. Some of the endings are tragic, and some are hopeful, but none of them end with a feeling of “and they lived happily ever after.” I love the power of these stories and the strong characters.

Another reason to just go buy a copy of this book is the artwork. Each story has illustrations in the margins that change as the story does. They added just another level of fantasy and magic to the book.

I really just can’t get over this book. I begged my sister to read it (and then she spoiled herself) because I just want everyone to know the magic that is The Language of Thorns. Go! Go now and read it!

Have you read this? What did you think?
