review 1: NOTE: EDITED DOWN TO 2 STARS! 3 stars is overly generous for this book. It wasn't as bad as a 2, but not as good as a 3, but I'm in a generous mood so I gave it the 3 only because of Morty the cat! He's the best and most interesting character in these books. I just don't like Sunny, she of the RIDICULOUS name, and don't care about her one way or the other. Her granny drove me nuts this time out, and though I hadn't figured out the "bad guy" until the end, I found I really just didn't care much. I kind of like Mitch, but Sunny's stupid name for him (Grumpy Pants? REALLY??) just makes me want to scream! Last one for me in this series. I said that with the last one, but this one finally sealed the deal for me!
review 2: This book meandered for quite a whi
... morele as it tried to decide what it was going to be. The trouble with the tarot is that there isn't much tarot. Sunny does a few generic readings but only once considers using it to help solve the main mystery. Morty, the cat, is magical but is largely ignored except when he waltzes in and makes all the problems go away at pivotal moments. The paranormal aspects are not integrated into the book in the first case, and are being used to resolve issues with "magic" that Sunny can't resolve for herself in the latter. It's a bit of a cop out. For a heroine in a mystery book, Sunny doesn't seem completely invested in the mystery. In the beginning she makes note about the clues she finds so that she can figure out who is sabotaging the town's festival, but the mystery is just an afterthought that she doesn't act on until forced to. She's not really trying...which would be fine except this is a mystery book. When she does try to put things together, she does so by withholding information from her detective boyfriend (while she gets angry when he withholds information from her) and concentrates on gossip -- both receiving and spreading. She's kind of simplistic. Even worse was the bickering between Grandma Gert and Fiona, which reduced them to caricatures with language more appropriate to Huck Finn than to contemporary grandparents. The romantic ending was extraordinarily shallow. All this being said, I still enjoyed the book. I just ended up not liking the characters very much. It needed less pettiness, more tarot (psychic stuff), and more cat...one can never have too much cat. less
