The Skull Throne (94/100) – Peter V. Brett

Overview:

The Skull Throne is setting the chess board for the final showdown between man and demon.  Arlen and Jardir, luckily still alive, take a backseat in this book and we follow the politics ensuing from the disappearance of the two deliverers.  Innevera and Abban do what they can to maintain their power as Jardir’s two sons Asome and Jayan.  Rojer really comes into his own in this book as he takes a firm grasp on his musical powers and proceeds to teach others how to manipulate the demons with music.  As the demons are massing and getting ready for the final showdown and Jardir and Arlen find a way to enter the core and put a stop to it once and for all?

Review – Definite Spoilers:
  • Concept: 8 While the struggle for power from a missing super power is a great concept to write about, it’s not entirely new.  Brett does a great job at getting into the minds of both Arlen and Jardir as they both are coming into this scenario from vastly different perspectives.
  • Writing: 10 Brett does a great job and hopping between the characters and giving us more points of reference to go through.  From Jardir’s sons struggling for power to the mind demon that’s been captured we truly get a sense of everything that’s happening from every perspective.
  • How long did it take to get into the book: 10 The last book ended on such a cliff hanger…literally, that I immediately dove right into this book to find out what happened.
  • Character Development: 8 Leesha continued to disappoint me this book as she trying to pass off her baby as Thamos’.  Rojer is at the peak of his power and it’s awesome to see everything he can do with his fiddle.  I loved getting into the mind of the mind demons.
  • Plot: 10 All of the assassination attempts and power struggles throughout all of the kingdoms are so well written.  Brett is setting the stage for something crazy in The Core and I can’t wait to see what happens.
  • Pacing: 10 Brett really has done a better job at hopping between everyone’s stories without it feeling too slow.  We didn’t get quite as much repeated back story this time around which really helped.
  • Ending:  10 I really think we’re in for a surprise with Rojer in the last book.  There’s so much vagueness going on that I would not be surprised to learn more about what happened to him.
  • Cover Art: 8 We see Renna holding her trusty knife, but I would have liked to see Asmone and Jayan as they are the ones battling for the skull throne.
  • World Building:  10 Brett does it again by going deeper into the histories of his characters and giving us even more perspectives to consider as everything is going down.  It makes it really hard to choose between Team Arlen and Team Jardir.
  • Would I read other books by the Author:  10 Absolutely.  I can’t wait for The Core to come out!  It’s marked on my calendar and preordered.
  • Follow-up Questions:

Is Rojer really dead?  It’s weird that there’s no port-mortem.   I wouldn’t be surprised if they used the hora from his fiddle to heal him.

So fire weapons have been used.  Will everyone work together and use that technology on the demons when they return in full force?

What’s going to happen with Leesha’s army?  How will she maintain power as they are becoming increasingly disobedient?

How will Arlen and Jardir get to the core?  The plan is to get the mind demon to lead them there, but surely the mind demon is going to attempt to trick them in some way.
