Tremors 2: Aftershocks (1996)

A Mexican oil company hires Earl to hunt the “graboids” which have been stalking their drilling fields giving him a second chance for fame and fortune, but the creatures have another surprise up their sleeves.

This sequel to the enjoyable comic creature feature hinges on one decision: the idea of abandoning the underground monster theme and replacing it with a new strain that attacks from above ground; perhaps understandable to create more scope for the idea, but it means that the film doesn’t “feel” like Tremors any more. The fact that the new beasties are simply a cross between the Predator, Gremlins and an oven ready chicken certainly does not help. The reappearance of Fred Ward and Michael Gross is welcome although the funny buddy partnership with Kevin Bacon is sorely missing and the script lacks the wit and sense of fun of the original.

Tremors 2 is a serviceable enough B-movie but nothing more than the typically tepid rehash that accounts for most cinematic sequels.

5/10
