review 1: I wanted to like this book, especially since it came highly recommended by a student. Truthfully, it took me a while to get into the book and I had to take a few breaks in between. Though the book picks up towards the middle, Littlefield's flashbacks are a little messy and hard to follow. At the center of her story is a Lucy. At age 14, she and her family are placed in a Japanese internment just after Pearl Harbor. As an older woman, she is getting ready to walk her daughter down the aisle and she is also a prime suspect in the murder of Reg Forrest - a man she has a history with in the internment camp. Lucy is also severely disfigured and the reader does not find out until much later. Throughout the story, you are constantly asking questions: Who killed Reg? Could... more it have been Lucy? How was Lucy disfigured? Finding the answers to those questions kept me reading, but I can't say I connected to any of the characters in the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mystery and suspense and enjoys plot twists.
review 2: ok, this book is amazing. I read it because I love to read historical fiction, and this book really paints a picture of one of the United States' darkest times. This book is really about what a mother would do for her daughter in desperate times. After reading this book, I immediately told all of my friends to read it as well. This book broke my heart because of what the mom does for her daughter. I recommend this book to anyone that is mature and patient enough to read it. less

Interesting story involving a Japanese internment camp. Twists and turns you might not see coming.
