As a science fiction fan, I had always been quite fascinated with the concept of telepathy- transferring thoughts and communicating with the mind alone, entirely independent of our basic senses. Telepathy, also known as “thought transference”, is defined as “the alleged communication of thought from one person to another by means other than the physical senses.”
Although the idea is all that it is- a theoretical, fictional concept, I kept looking for real-life evidence of it. Being able to communicate with our minds alone is a power that could change the entire ball game. And so, finally after my extensive researching, going through ancient manuscripts (just Google search, really) on the possibilities of the tangible existence of telepathy, I came across Twin Telepathy.
The world has always been intrigued with identical twins. You would be surprised to know that there have been recorded instances of twins with telepathic abilities. This psychic, telepathic bond between some twins has always been a para-psychological fascination.
Do twins really possess some shared form of extrasensory perception (ESP) that the rest of the world doesn’t?
The idea of twin telepathy has been around for well over a century. Many novels are centered on it. Alexandre Dumas’ novel “The Corsican Brothers”, tells the story of two once-conjoined brothers who were separated at birth yet even as adults continue to share not only thoughts but also physical sensations. Other fictional novels like “Two little girls in blue” and the recent “Sisterland” also tell the story of twin girls with psychic abilities.
Telepathy mostly occurs when one of the twins is in a time of pain or distress, as shown in many personal anecdotes. There have been instances where while one twin is having a heart attack, the other has felt the pain. Another instance is of a woman rescuing her twin who had a fit and was drowning in a bathtub because she sensed her twin’s distress. In an extreme case, a girl broke her ankle in a bike accident; and her sister started to experience swelling on the same ankle that her twin broke even though she had done nothing to hurt it.
With mounting evidence and extensive research on this phenomenon, Guy Playfair has published the book “Twin telepathy”. The most common explanation for twin telepathy is that the similarities in genes, causing the identical twins to have similar brainwaves, leading to them acting alike and experiencing telepathy.
So, twin telepathy- a coincidence, psychic ability, scientific phenomenon or something more?
