review 1: Reading this, I'm struck by the initial reaction to Captain Marvel's new look, the universal revulsion to the short hair. Carol is constantly having to navigate the "hard"/ masculine parts of her identity and the "soft"/ feminine parts, and the character's costume history is only one small part of that: bare midriff/ panties, bathing suit, space bikini...that kind of intentional thought given to management and mitigation of gendered identity would be interesting to see DeConnick tap into. I mean, how could she NOT have to do that? Even in the industry itself, women are virgin/whore, mother/wife, "one of the guys"/ "bitch"...not even invited to the company retreats. So this kind of layered identity management, Carol MUST engage it. And given the types of characters she find... mores herself surrounded by (Iron Man, Hawkeye, etc...men that might not respect her as an equal), it must be maddening for her. Even looking at the collection titles, "Down," "Stay Fly," etc, we're being presented a non-threatening female hero seemingly concerned with going down and staying pretty, hard, and high. There's a lot of decidedly problematic gendered stuff happening external to the book itself, and I'm merely musing on how that could play out in the book.Thank God Carol and the book are more than the packaging, because DeConnick is doing some great stuff here. I'm sad that we've already had a pall of illness over the book, a hallmark of previous female-centered books. But beyond that, it does allow DeConnick to build out the supporting cast. I wonder where Jessica Jones Cage is, given that she and Carol were close during ALIAS by Bendis & Gaydos. It's been good to see her with Captain America and Spider Woman, and most especially with the previous Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau. I also wonder when Carol will stop using her sash as an accessory weapon...ufh.
review 2: Carol Danvers, back in the swing of the superhero life, finds herself grounded by a mysterious medical condition that makes it unsafe for her to use her powers to fly. Meanwhile, old enemies from her past are reappearing and threatening everyone she holds dear. Will the help and support of her friends be enough to get her through?I liked this one a lot more than Volume One. It didn't seem as heavy on the backstory - or perhaps the story itself was more straightforward. I do love a good plot based around awesome women punching things. Or maybe it's just that is relied a lot more on Carol's existing supporting cast - a cast I am rapidly growing to love. Recommended for anyone who likes a good old-fashioned superhero yarn. Although I do suggest you have Avengers: The Enemy Within available, because this one ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. less
