Video Game Library Analysis

For the past couple of months, I have been looking at my steam library and wondering how or if I was going to play all of these games. In my last blog post, I had started a 12 in 12 list, where I looked at 12 games I would try and get through. Of course, I wasn’t content to pick 12 games, I picked 24. 12 Story Based Role playing or action games, and then 12 strategy titles to run through a campaign. It is halfway through the 1st month, and I am off the rails. I started out well, as I began playing the Witcher 3 right as the new year began. I had planned on a Europa Universalis IV campaign, and ditched that within one week played a Crusader Kings 2 campaign.

So, I don’t think the 12 in 12 is going to happen. I played Fallout 4 all day yesterday after a reddit post about how Fallout 4 is my favorite Fallout game. That is when I realized that it is not my job to play video games. I play video games because I find it enjoyable and it is something I do to relax and enjoy some time out. I realized that I have been treating the games like a job (This Blog, which I want to continue, is a perfect example). It did get me thinking about my game library and what types of games I have bought and what I actually play.

Now let me say that I do not have a very large library of games. I only have 91 games. I can say that if the game has DLC, there is a really good chance that I have bought it. Of the 91 games, though, I have only played 24 games or about 26% of my games for more than ten hours. My overall number one game played is Fallout 4 at 224 hours. So, Fallout 4 is not only my favorite Fallout Game, it is evidently my Favorite game overall. Coming in 2nd is the Witcher 3 at 201 hours.

Looking at my library, I divided the games into the following categories: Walking Simulator, Survival, Strategy, Simulation, RPG, Roguelike, Platformer, Metroidvania, Adventure, and Action. Of the 91 total games, I have 32 RPG games which is about 35.2%. Strategy titles account for 22.0% or 20 titles out of 91. All of the rest of the categories combined have 52 titles which is equal 57.1% of the titles. Figure 1 shows a distribution of these games.

Looking at playtime, which I had to estimate for the GOG games and Minecraft, I played video games for a total of 1278.8 Hours. Figure 2 shows the distribution of the hours played per genre. I played RPGs for 637.4 hours or 49.8% of my playtime. I played strategy titles for 288.8 hours or 22.5%. All other categories combined are about 352.6 hours or 27.5% with the preponderance coming from survival (138.3 hours) and simulation (110.2 hours) games.

It is important to note that 24 games (26%) which account for 1171.5 out of 1278.8 or 91.6% of the play time. This means that the other 74% of the games in my library only account for 8.4% of game time. Breaking this down, there are 28 games that I haven’t even opened. There are more games with no play time than I do with play time over ten hours. Another 14 have been played for less than an hour, which means I started the game; maybe got through the opening menu (maybe not), poked around the game for a couple of minutes; and then closed it, never to play again.

Of the games that I have not played 37% are RPGs 20.8% are Strategy titles. This is fairly consistent with the total numbers of games in these genres. I have less than three hours of play time combined between the one Walking Simulator the three Roguelikes, the one platformer, and the two Metroidvania games. While the overall numbers themselves were low, only 7 games, they are the only genres which did not have games where I played at least 10 hours. Three out of the seven action and adventure titles were played for a combined total of 6.8 hours, while the other four were played for almost 100 hours combined. I need to point out that I categorized Assassin’s Creed: Origins for 29 hours as an RPG. The other Assassin’s Creed games I categorized as an Action game. I feel like Origins is closer to the Witcher, where Black Flag and AC2 were closer to the Batman games I played which I classified as action games

A couple of conclusions can be made from the data. First, I should probably pass on future platformers, metroidvanias, and roguelikes. While I want to like the categories and the game seem like fun, I do not play those games and would only be wasting my money My most played categories are RPG, Strategy, Simulation, and survival genre games. A third of my game time was spent with two games, Fallout 4 and the Witcher 3. Although, I have spent over 400 hours of time between the two games, I have had the problem of starting multiple times, especially with Fallout where you can build such a unique character. Another conclusion is that I purchase a lot of games and do not play them in general. As far as games which I seem to play, I like RPGs, strategy games simulations, and survival games. I also like Batman games.
