review 1: I wanted so much for this book to be of four or five star quality. The only thing keeping me from selecting one star is that the historical context and Italian customs explained were interesting to me. I started out liking the story, and just when I was getting to know a character, the author jumps to a later time-frame and character. There were characters with both American and Italian names, and it was hard to keep everyone straight. Way, way, way too much gratuitous sex, starting with the creepy priest in the beginning of the story. I'm not prudish, but this was over the top. Do NOT waste your time on this one. There are much better reads out there!
review 2: This book started out well and I thought it would be a good story about several generations of
... more an Italian immigrant family. Josephina is the matriarch of the family and her story is well told in part one. After that the telling gets mixed up and I was unable to follow what generation and whose children were being talked about. I found the rest of the book to be confusing. It seems like when I finally figured out who was being told about the author would change to another character I'd never heard of. In the end, most of these other characters really had nothing to do with Josephina's story, except that they were somehow related to her. I'm glad the author went back to Josephina for the end of the book. less

It was an OK book, sad in many ways about how women were treated.

Interesting, but NOT one of Hood's best, by far.
