Angel Crawford is a loser.
Living with her alcoholic deadbeat dad in the swamps of southern Louisiana, she’s a high school dropout with a pill habit and a criminal record who’s been fired from more crap jobs than she can count. Now on probation for a felony, it seems that Angel will never pull herself out of the downward spiral her life has taken.
That is, until the day she wakes up in the ER after overdosing on painkillers. Angel remembers being in an horrible car crash, but she doesn’t have a mark on her. To add to the weirdness, she receives an anonymous letter telling her there’s a job waiting for her at the parish morgue—and that it’s an offer she doesn’t dare refuse.
Before she knows it she’s dealing with a huge crush on a certain hunky deputy and a brand new addiction: an overpowering craving for brains. Plus, her morgue is filling up with the victims of a serial killer who decapitates his prey—just when she’s hungriest!
Angel’s going to have to grow up fast if she wants to keep this job and stay in one piece. Because if she doesn’t, she’s dead meat.
Literally.

I adored this story so much and now I’m beating myself up over tha fact that I waited so long to finally read it. Okay, so I know why I avoided it this long. When I first came across these books (the series) the only reasn they got on my TBR were the awesome covers (I love Dan dos Santos’ art). But since I don’t really like zombies in general and my first attempt with a Diana Rowland book ended horribley I put this off, way off. Yet it kept bugging me and somehow it came up on my radar overe and over again. So the other day I gave it a go and I’m so glad for it.
I can admit that its nothing like I expected but in a good way. It also quite different from the usual urban fantasy, it has a different atmosphere. Also this book takes quite a unique spin on the murder mystery part of the plot and in the end it’s more centered around the main character not so ordinary everyday life. It’s a really enjoyable and refreshing read.
The writing pretty much surprised me the most since I had the most problems with that part in the other Diana Rowland book I read. It improved in a positive direction. It’s quite smooth with some sass and dark humor. I devoured it.
There is the interesting plot, the intriguing worldbuilding, the anticipation regarding the mystery, still for me it was Angel character that sealed the deal. She is just different from what I’m used to. She is a pragmatist and a looser, someone sho gave upon life until one lifealtering event and a little help makes her open her eyes. From then on she tries to improve and works her butt off al this without loosing herself, her snark or edge in the process.
I liked the whole coroner angle, also discovering things from the clueless Angel’s POV. At first you wouldn’t expect to like her but in truth she is so easy to get to like.
There is a lot of supernatural, mystery and action to the storyline but there is also a hint of romance. I don’t know where I stand on that front yet but this is admittedly a phenomenal urban fantasy with a different vibe and an unpredictable plot.
