Warcraft: Of Blood and Honor by Chris Metzen

If experience has taught me anything about books derived from games it’s to approach them with a great deal of patience and forgiveness. Which means I often skip them. But I must admit I have done Chris Metzen’s Of Blood and Honor a grave injustice all these years.

I read this little knightly fantasy romp on a whim last night and lo and behold, after a dearth of meh books not worth posting about here is one to recommend to you, fine people. And it’s a World of Warcraft book… By Metzen. Well, we all have to learn not make such sweeping assumptions and here’s me learning (sorry about that Chris! Smashing good tale there!).

You, on the other hand, can benefit from my having to admit my snobbish ways and just skip straight to enjoying a tale about honor, bigotry and an unlikely friendship that would cost a truly honorable man everything he holds dear in life (and possibly having you rolling a new death knight since we get to meet up with some of these characters again during that epic tale).

There’s not much else to add in truth. It is a competent story that will touch the hearts of both fans of the IP and readers who have never set foot on Azeroth since, sadly, its subject matter of unthinking bias (yes there is some irony here in my own bias, thank you very much) towards foreign peoples is still very much on point and also how warfare crystallizes our tribal viewpoints of each other. Again, I think, very much of the times. Perhaps it always will be.

To those that do have some knowledge of Warcraft lore I will impart that Of Blood and Honor deals with the meeting of Tirion Fordring and Eitrigg and the subsequent consequences thereof.

Do pick this book up if you have the chance it is just the cozy fantasy thing to snuggle down with on a windy autumn evening!

4 Pally Pauldrons out of 5. Maybe 3,5 as it could use more not-stupid women. Or just more than one would be nice but hey same old, same old, amirite?
