review 1: After a really slow start, this book became quite engrossing. What kept me reading through the very gradual buildup was the character Gerlof, an old man who looks back on his life with an attitude of acceptance mingled with regret. The story of the missing child proves to be quite a torturous one, involving a number of dubious types and ending with a really surprising twist. A bonus is the picture the author creates of the Swedish island of Oland, its history, scenery and inhabitants. This is a very human-scaled story of family tragedies, friendship, love and loss, told in a restrained style. Definitely worth reading.
