“It is December, and nobody asked if I was ready” part of Winter Without You by Sarah Kay.
The piece its entirety is here and it’s wonderful. I felt the tears well up. In both the ways, the writer depicted a lonely winter, but also that this is my first winter without Poppa. It’s odd how six months on it’s the little pangs that catch me out now.
Sarah Kay is a spoken word poet so it would be best if you can read Winter Without You aloud. It’s depressing how few poems are read out- or even read. It’s a wonderful format that can elegantly veil, suggest, and play across several meanings. If you read it that is.
