review 1: I enjoyed the direction this book took for several reasons. First, Breq is captain of a sentient Ship...but it's not the same as actually BEING the Ship, and it's interesting to watch her navigate that distinction. I also liked the sense of dislocation from the rest of the universe - Breq (and everyone else) are cut off from the rest of the universe, and have very little idea what is going on elsewhere, leaving everyone trying to figure out what are purely local concerns and what are echoes of the larger power struggle. The book also added more depth to the questions raised in the previous installment about how a large, colonial empire really works, and for whom it works. Some citizens are definitely more equal than others.
review 2: Quite good. Easier to
... moreread than the first because you didn't need to establish so much background. I did find that I had forgotten some of the relevant plot points from the first novel but it didn't matter so much. This installment carried itself quite well. The characters are interesting, the plot device is clever and the writing is good. I find myself wanting to know more about what it's like to live as a multi-bodied person. The author does a nice job at covering both the positives and negatives of such an experience. less
