Weekly TBR Additions (17th of January, 2018)

A weekly feature in which I share new books I added to my TBR.

The first Weekly TBR Additions post of the year! I don’t do these regularly because I fail at life, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t have a great selection of books to share with you. I have recently discovered a site called BookAxe where you get personalized reading recommendations based on your tastes. So I have been busy adding some new books onto my TBR, and I am excited to share! Let’s get to them, shall we?

1. Dept. of Speculation by Jenny Offill

Why I added it: If you have been following my blog for a while, then you know my top buzz words in a blurb are “a portrait of a marriage“. There’s something that fascinates me about relationships, especially the failed kind. And that’s exactly what this book promises! It’s told through letters from the wife to the husband and it seems to be exactly the kind of book I’ll love, so looking forward to it!

 2. Runaway by Alice Munro

Why I added it: People keep recommending Alice Munro to me, so I thought I have to read one of her books. This one speaks to me because it’s a short story collection about love of all kinds AND it has women in the center of each story. It’s exactly the type of book that has the potential to change my stance on short stories.

3. Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult

Why I added it: I never read a Jodi Picoult book before and I am not entirely sure why. I always had an irrational feeling that they were sappy and not for me. However, the premise of this one really appealed to me. It’s about a delivery nurse who gets reassigned to another patient, because the parents don’t want a women of color taking care of their child. This supposedly triggers a series of events that leads to a trial and Ruth (the nurse) has to learn to work together with her counsel and to try and live her life as ordinarily as possible. Sounds super amazing and like something I would enjoy.

 4. Married Love and Other Stories by Tessa Hadley

Why I added it: Just refer to number 2 again. Everyone recommends me to read Hadley, it’s about marriages and relationships (hopefull mostly failed ones, because I like that) and it’s a short story collection to convert me to actually loving them. So a promising read, plus some stories have really interesting blurbs like: “An eighteen-year-old insists on marrying her music professor, then finds herself shut out from his secrets”. Fun!

5. Young Jane Young by Gabrielle Zevin

Why I added it: Gabrielle Zevin is another author I was irrationally avoiding. I can’t explain it. However, I am listening to a new podcast, Get Booked, from Book Riot and this one came up. Basically, the premise of the podcast is that readers ask for specific recommendations and the hosts find books for them. It’s great. Anyways, someone asked for a book like Gilmore Girls and this one was recommended. As you may or may not know, I love Gilmore Girls (I even made a book tag on it), so naturally this immediately went to my TBR!

That’s it for this week’s TBR additions! As always, I’d love to hear about new books you’ve discovered and added to your TBRs!
