review 1: "Scaredy-Cat, Splat!" by Rob Scotton is just one of many books in the Splat the Cat book series. In this book, Splat is brainstorming costume ideas for his school's Halloween party. Splat wants to really scare his classmates, because the scariest costume will win a special prize from the teacher. Splat really wants to win the prize, so he decides to dress up as a spooky eight legged spider. Yet, when he arrives at school, his classmates merely giggle at his silly costume. Then when it comes time to carve spooky Jack O' Lanterns, Splat's funny looking pumpkin is a source of laughter for the rest of the students. Is there any way that Splat could win the award for the scariest costume, or will he indeed just be a scaredy-cat? I see this book as being used in a primary classroom, and definitely around the Halloween season. I am sure that the children would giggle as they flip through the pages, and admire the illustrations of Splat and his furry friends. Rob Scotton also uses very basic vocabulary which would make it a great book for beginning readers to enjoy. Lovers of the other Splat the Cat books will not be disappointed with "Scaredy-Cat Splat!"
review 2: Scaredy-Cat, Splat!" is a rhyming book by Rob Scotton. The story is about a group of cats who are dressed up for Halloween. Splat, one of the cats, wants to win the prize for being the scariest cat at Cat School. It is a very accessible read for emergent readers. The illustrations by scary and reflect the narration. The pictures are effective clues that will guide readers to the meaning of the story. less
