When did I get like this? is a memoir by Amy Wilson. A look at motherhood, that every mom will be able to relate to. This was the book of the month at my book club. I had never heard of it before this, but am quite pleased that it was the pick for the month.
“From the creator and star of the one-woman off-Broadway show Mother Load, comes When Did I Get Like This?, a screamingly funny take on being a modern woman, wife, and mother told with “a level of hilarity that even non-moms can appreciate” (Time Out). Amy Wilson’s poignant and provocative, utterly outrageous look at “the Screamer, the Worrier, the Dinosaur-Chicken-Nugget-Buyer, and Other Mothers I Swore I’d Never Be” has already earned an appreciative response from Three-Martini Playdate author Christie Mellor, who calls it, “As entertaining as it is reassuring.” ”

What I did like:
I really enjoyed how Amy Wilson was able to tie in each story; able to find a life lesson or parenting perspective. Each story (which is only one chapter long) is told with strong emotions that every mother can relate to, no matter what your parenting views may be. This memoir shows what its really like to be a mom. The true emotions, and experiences of being a mother, not the picture perfect, unattainable image we all have of how its going to be (before we become mothers). Being pregnant, giving birth, breast versus bottle, home made baby food versus store bought, mom and me classes, dealing with advice and learning to trust your maternal instincts. The differences between the thought process of a mom and a dad is explained to a tee. The highs and lows every mother feels from the big events to the small every day things.
What I didn’t like:
There wasn’t anything I can really say I didn’t like about the book. It is someone’s life we’re talking about here. Maybe the last chapter could have ended on a different note. But I feel that stopping her story where she did, we see that, no matter, how many kids you have, or how old they may be, there will still be uncertainty, or second guessing yourself. Or mom guilt. That’s real life. That’s motherhood.
Rating:
I would rate this 4 out of 5.
