review 1: Fabulous again! Clever tale within a tale that uses a child's voice and hand (including spelling errors). David Almond's psychology is sophisticated and his expression of it so elegant. He is daring with the dark material (hurt, damage & violence) that he chooses to express in children's works, and I admire him for it. I wish I'd been a child reading his books, but even as an adult I'm learning a lot from them.
review 2: Picked this up at half price books for a dollar. I have enjoyed David Almond's work and wanted to check this hybrid type graphic novel. It was interesting and poignant at times but felt a little forced on a occasion–although middle graders will have a very different perspective. The illustrations match the novel's alternating raw and se... morentimental mood and tone. An interesting exploration of the power of imagination and the process of greif and healing. less
