DURBAN’S eagerly awaited new supper theatre, The Rockwood Theatre, opening in the former Krakatoa venue at Sibaya Casino in November, is offering a special prize for one lucky follower of my showbiz and leisure site.

The prize is a table for 10 people to attend any performance, from November 17 until January 28 (but excluding the New Year’s Eve performance), of the first show to be staged at the venue.

Sibaya Casino’s old Krakatoa nightclub gets a facelift to re-emerge in November as The Rockwood Theatre, a Baryard Theatre-like venue,

It is Knowing Me Knowing You, a tribute to great partnerships of rock, pop and folk, which will star award-winning Durban singer-actress Liesl Coppin (a member of the popular Glitter Girls trio) on vocals, alongside fellow singers Jemma Shankland , Ofentse Mokhuane and Jean Citto.

Scheduled to run until January 28, the production also features Durban artists Calli Thomson on keyboards, Jason Kylen on guitar, Kirsty van der Linde on sax and Kirsty’s husband, Dylan van der Linde, on drums. Completing the band is Alouise Peens on bass and guitar.

(For details on how to win the 10 tickets, see the red text at the end of this article).

Knowing Me, Knowing You, which had its premiere at The Rockwood Theatre in Pretoria – formerly the Barnyard Theatre – features hits songs associated with Fleetwood Mac, Abba, Ike and Tina Turner, No Doubt, Sonny and Cher, Mick Jagger, The Beatles, Carly Simon, Whitney Houston and Mango Groove, among many others.

It has been directed and co-produced with The Rockwood Theatre by musical theatre stalwart, Durban-born Andrew Webster, who, after having been based in Gauteng, is moving back to his hometown with his wife, Cindy (the venue’s marketing manager) and their twin daughters.

As with the former Barnyard Theatre concept, the new 300-seater Rockwood Theatre will have pizzas, platters and light meals on sale, but patrons can also take along their own food if it has been bought at the Sibaya Food Court. All beverages, however, have to be bought at the theatre. Note that the theatre encourages patrons to pre-order meals when making bookings. Platters need to be ordered at least 48 hours in advance.

Performances of Knowing Me, Knowing You, will be at 8pm Thursdays to Saturdays, and at 2pm on Sundays. Doors will  open 90 minutes prior to show time.

Good news is that there is an opening special ticket price for all shows from November 17 to 30 – only R99 a head. For performances from December 1 to January 28, tickets will cost R100 each on Thursdays, and R165 each on Fridays and Saturdays. On Sundays, the price is R130 a head (half price for pensioners and free for under-12s).

The Rockwood Theatre is owned by Tom and Ann Muller, who also own the Pretoria branch. To book for shows or get more details about the venue, visit www.rockwoodtheatre.co.za or call (031) 161 0000
