Young Leader of the Year: Connor Whitelock

A promising cricket coach who has his eyes on inspiring the next generation of cricketers has received a national award for his leadership and coaching skills.

Connor Whitelock from Durham who previously coached at Sedgefield Cricket Club, picked up Young Leader of the Year for his contribution to grassroots cricket.

19 year old Whitelock said: “To be awarded the young leader of the year award was surreal.

“I didn’t realise people thought so positive and highly of me.

“To just be given an opportunity to coach the kids at Sedgefield was amazing but to be awarded a national award for something I love is a real bonus.”

The bowling all rounder who has been coaching for five years said: “I took up coaching to give back to the club what they provided me with.

“I want to give an opportunity to kids to become the best cricketer they can be, I originally wanted to be a teacher, but since coaching I realised I prefer to coach just cricket sessions.”

Connor who has recently began coaching for the Durham Cricket Board, is relishing the opportunity,: “Being linked with Durham Cricket Board and to coach under their name is something I love.

“To come through the ranks and to give kids the opportunity I was given is something I enjoy doing.

The Northumbria University sports student now hopes for a career in the sports coaching industry, adding: “In the future I would like to be fully connected with Durham Cricket Board.

I want to work through the coaching ranks and get to to highest stage possible.”

Thanks to Connor for the interview and all the best for your career in cricket coaching.
