review 1: What's that old saying about putting X number of chimps in front of typewriters and eventually you would come up with Great Expectations, or something? Well, I think that's how the world ended up with this book. What a load of twaddle. I listened to the audio book and the soupy writing was exacerbated by a narrator who, though mellifluous of tone, mispronounced every second word. She even pronounced "says" to rhyme with "days", which sounds very strange coming out of George V's mouth. Marquise is pronounced mark-WISSSSS, tsarevich as saverich, the list goes on and on. When she uttered the name of the Guerlain fragrance L'heure Bleu it sounded like she was throwing up. But then, the dialogue between the 17 year old David and 15 year old Lily made me want to throw up, I... more can tell you. The book is also littered with drunken-uncle-style knowing winks to the future. However, it's worth sticking around until the end because Dean even throws in a Titanic tangent. In all, it's one Audible credit I'd like back. I'd like to find the reviewer who likened this to Philippa Gregory and give them a piece of my mind. It makes the later Barbara Cartland novels seem like Kafka. I didn't like it very much, can you tell?
review 2: I really did not like this book. The reason I gave it three stars is because I could see that the author had done a lot of research and knew her material. There are several reasons that I disliked this story. 1. I couldn't connect with characters.2. For awhile, it read like the book of Genesis in the Bible only about royal marriages3. I couldn't keep track of who the story was really about. The title is The Golden Prince but there were other romantic interests going on that took away from the story of David and Lily and quite frankly, I was much more interested in what was going to happen with Marigold than any of the others4. The part about the Titanic...really? I thought that was an unnecessary bit into the story and I was really put off by that scenario from the very beginning. It changed nothing in the story and did little to add drama to the story. It wasn't like I felt I was "there". I was actually annoyed with that whole deal5. I didn't cheer at the end. I didn't cry at the end. What I did say was, "Thank God that's over."But for someone who is really into royalty and understands how it all works, then you would probably really like this book. It just wasn't a good pick for me. less
