review 1: QF32 offers an insight to the life of an extraordinary pilot whose lifelong training saved the day of more than 400 men and women on board the flight. The story tells how he grew up, joined the RAAF, undergo training in the Air Force and eventually joined Qantas from a Boeing pilot to an Airbus A380 pilot. It's very interesting to read of his life and aspiration. However, the part on what happen when the engine failed during the flight and when the story went into how he remedy the ECAM flight system was too lengthy and technical which bores the reader down a bit. The ending was interesting as it described how he evacuated the passengers safely and his thoughts when he debriefed the passengers on ground. In some angle of the final few chapters of this book, the author seems... more to be promoting or speaking on behalf of the airline company instead.
review 2: I have just finished reading the Kindle version and have reviewed the comments by others to date. Being a commercial aviation aficianado, I quite enjoyed the book and am currently on a second reading. In hindsight, I do think the first half or so where the author recounts his history and experiences can become quite dull. Whilst I have no doubt the individual is a very accomplished Captain, by the mid point I was expecting him to proclaim "I am the Greatest" (shades of Muhammad Ali). Once past that and into his description of the actual accident, the story becomes exciting. In the latter half he does emphasize the importance of teamwork and cooperation in the cockpit. I do quibble with the decision he took to sequester all the passengers onboard for nearly two hours in oppressive conditions following the successful landing. In my humble opinion, it seems that those that may have wished to deplane could have done so safely via the rearmost exit on the starboard side. I do hope that the industry will investigate methods to shut down a runaway engine by some manual method rather than relying on immense volumes of foam to be directed into the intake. All things considered, a very good read. less
