review 1: A decent foray into the world of Jeff Bezos an introduction to the early era of Amazon.com. A lot of us take for granted the convenience that exists from ordering books online and having them come to us. The purpose of an innovative, game-changing company is that they knock down their competitors and force competitors to work much harder to get our attention. Borders was lazy and had no idea how to live in the modern world. It is an open question whether Barnes and Noble does, although they have indeed worked quite hard by adding discounts, pleasant sofas and chairs, and improved customer service. I even have an independent bookstore in my area, despite Amazon.com, precisely because it focuses on customer service and offers a very unique style (and, perhaps for that reason... more, is used quite heavily in the film industry). As some reviewers have mentioned, this book does not get too close to the details or the challenges that Jeff Bezos faced as an entrepreneur. That is unfortunate, but it does not take away from many of the innovative ideas that are showed. Each company certainly has a unique culture, and in Amazon's culture, it obviously is based upon innovation. In contrast, if you think of a company like IBM, you sometimes wonder, "What have they been up to for the last 20 years because I can't think of a single idea!" This book was written in 2011, so it does not focus on some of the new ideas that Amazon has created, such as the Paperwhite/Voyage, the new Fires, Fire TV, and Alexa device.
review 2: 2.5 stars = As other reviewers have said, this book seemed impersonal and similar to a school report. The facts were there (I think?), but there wasn't much of a personal level or anything that really grabbed the reader. I listened to the audio and it was okay. I work with books, so it was interesting to hear a lot of the backstory. Would I recommend this? Probably not. I'd be interested to see how "The Everything Store" compares. It wasn't available as an audiobook when I checked this out from the library. less

Mielenkiintoinen tarina, mutta jäi vähän pintapuoliseksi ja suppeaksi.
