review 1: Secrets at Sea by Richard Peck – Historical Fiction/Animal Fantasy, 4th grade and up – Well, it took over three months to read this book aloud to my son. The sequel will be read just by me – The Mouse with the Question Mark Tail. The word choice is completely fitting of a historical fiction book which often needed to be explained before it flew over my son’s head. Really cute story about a little mouse who is desperate to keep her little family of siblings together, so desperate that she has the family go across the ocean on an adventure to stick with their human family. Great character development and fun book for those mouse fiction obsess readers…
review 2: I have not read Richard Peck before, which is quite surprising since this is his 40th book,
... morehe won a Newberry in 2001, and he attended the same college I did - DePauw University. Where have I been?? I really loved SECRETS AT SEA. Peck has combined fantasy, historical fiction, adventure, romance, and humor into a wonderful story about the Cranstons -- the upstairs Cranstons who are human, and the downstairs Cranstons who are a family of mice living in the walls and borrowing items from the human Cranstons. This book reminded me of John Peterson's THE LITTLES combined with Margery Sharp's THE RESCUERS. I listened to the audiobook version, read by Jayne Entwistle, and feel that her voices and accents really added to the story. I loved the humor in this book and the surprise outcomes. I often try to predict where I think the story is going, and I was surprised up to the very end. I also love that Richard Peck does not write down to children. There are many phrases and words in the story that will challenge them and expand their knowledge. The interest level for this book is grades 3-6, but is probably around the 4th/5th-grade level for individual reading. less
