December/Christmas Haul!

This is a bit late lol and I’m not including a wrap up here because I already talked about what I read in December in this post.  Also, this is going to be longer than usual because it includes everything I got for Christmas as well!

Christmas presents:

1. The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

Given to me by my parents!  I had never actually heard of this book when I found it in my stocking, but upon doing more research, I’m really excited to read this book.  It sounds like a really cool dark fantasy and looks a little creepy.  It also has a super high rating on Goodreads, so I approve!

2. Galapagos by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

This book was given to me by my boyfriend and it was the last book I read of 2017!  It’s probably my favourite Vonnegut book (maybe tied with Slaughterhouse Five), but I really liked the sci-fi elements in it and thought it was so weird (but a good kind of weird).  I gave it 5 stars!

3. Mother Night by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

My boyfriend also gave me this book, except I haven’t read it yet.  I’m going to use it for my 2018 reading challenge (A book with the time of day in the title).  I’m glad this one gets back to history and I’ll probably read it around March!

4. The Last Days of Magic by Mark Tompkins

Given to me by my roommate!  I also hadn’t heard of this one before, but the premise sounds really cool.  I added it to be 2018 reading challenge (A book you borrowed or that was given to you as a gift).

Books I bought myself:

1. Grishaverse trilogy by Leigh Bardugo

I bought this at the beginning of December.  I’m reading Six of Crows for my reading challenge and even though everyone says I can read it before starting the Grisha series, I had a month before 2018 started and decided to just read it anyway.  It was definitely worth it.  The first book does some really good world building and introduces us to the unique protagonist, Alina, and a really interesting villain, the Darkling.  The second book was a bit slow, but the ending was AMAZING and made me want to read the last book right away.  Ruin and Rising was probably my favourite book.  It was action packed and had a really good ending, wrapping everything up nicely.

Shadow and Bone: 5 stars

Siege and Storm: 4 stars

Ruin and Rising: 5 stars

2. Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

I’ve also already read this one and I really liked it too.  I have a full review here, but the gist of it is that the author world builds really well and I liked the rebellion theme, which is in a lot of my favourite books.  I gave it five stars!

3. Cinder by Marissa Meyer

I bought this on boxing day and I’m really excited to read it!  It’s the favourite of a few people I know and the plot sounds really interesting.  I’m going to use it for the cyberpunk prompt for the reading challenge.

4. Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom Duology

Also bought this on boxing day.  I was looking for the box set because I knew they were on sale, but I couldn’t find it anywhere in the store (even though the computer said there was 1 left in the store).  Then, I realized that buying the two hardcovers individually actually costed less (which is good cause these books are kinda expensive) and I grabbed the last two copies.  I’m using Six of Crows for A book involving a heist and A book with an animal in the title.  I’m really excited to read both of these because everyone seems to love them so much!

5. Part of the Heroes of Olympus series (boxed set) by Rick Riordan

This was an impulse buy at the end of December.  I came across it on a 50% off boxed set table, but it was the only one without a sticker on it.  I decided to buy it because I LOVED the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series when I was 12 or 13 and I read The Lost Hero when it came out.  I kind of already own that book (well, it’s actually my brother’s), but a few of our books were lost when my parents moved, so I figured it was worth buying the three books.  I actually thought this was a trilogy until Goodreads told me otherwise, so I’ll have to buy the last two books.  Oops.

6. The Bane Chronicles by Cassandra Clare

I’m surprised I didn’t buy this as soon as it came out, since Cassandra Clare is one of my favourite authors.  I really excited to read this to read about what Magnus has gotten up to in his immortal life, but I’m rereading The Mortal Instruments first, so I probably won’t get to it for awhile.

I’m really excited to read the ones I haven’t already gotten to and I hope they don’t disappoint!
