review 1: Really good - surprisingly good book about a group of middle-schoolers who gain superpowers. The main character, Penelope, becomes a genius mad scientist and imbues her two best friends with superpowers. While her superhero parents are mostly clueless, they accidentally become a supervillan team called "The Inscrutable Machine" and wreak fun havoc. This is a really good read, with likable characters and well written, imaginative action
review 2: When you parents are Superheroes and you are expecting to follow in their footsteps it is a very exciting day when your powers show up. Penelopy Ack, daughter of Brian “Brainy” Ack and “The Audit” along with her friends Claire and Ray are like any other middle school kids, except that they’re really clever and
... more they just got their super-powers. When they try them out as a group for the first time some wires get crossed, their school ends up destroyed and everyone assumes that they are Supervillians rather than Superheroes. Instead of fighting that perception they decide to go with it for a while, after all the school will be closed for a while and they have some time on their hands, and they can always switch to being good guys later – but for now being the bad guys is kind of fun. So long as her parents don’t find out, because they would definitely not approve, good thing for her and the rest of the “Inscrutable Machine” as she and her friends are called no one knows it is them, well almost no one and that is about to make things a bit more difficult. I highly recommend giving this a read, this is quite enjoyable but the kids portrayed seem more high school than middle school to me. The writing is clear and where there is confusion regarding science magic simply takes over. I like that throughout the book the reader can easily visualize the characters and what is happening to them – until the super-villian show down where the ability to follow everyone and everything gets a bit sketchy. Overall a great effort and I hope that author Richard Roberts continues the series, I’d love to know what The Inscrutable Machine is up to next. less
