review 1: I chose to read this book simply because Richelle Mead's name was on it. It took me a while to get onboard with the story line and even longer to understand all her termonogy for the different sects of people. Once the book got interesting, I couldn't put it down, but it took a couple hundred pages to get interesting. I'm excited to see how this story pans out and will definitely read the second one.
review 2: A good book - took me a while to figure out how the world was structured and what areas they were talking about. But I liked that the author didn't over-explain or elaborate. Likeable, realistic hero who has his faults, strong female lead. Intriguing idea, even if it isn't new (one of the best humans-as-chess-players books is The Eight by Katherine Nevi
... morelle, although that isn't driven by gods using humans). Enjoyed and am looking forward to #2. less
