review 1: The second installment of a very solid series. Eugenie Markham didn't disappoint as a protagonists, and the love triangle didn't get too wearying. I like the diversity of this series, the solid writing, and the down-to-earth language of the characters. Fair warning--the plot goes in very dark places (rape, consent, abduction, sex trafficking, and speciesism between gentry/humans abounds), and as a rape survivor I found myself sobbing in bits, even as I re-read it.But the fact is, I did re-read the book because it's refreshingly realistic in a genre filled with problematic love stories and terribly written romance. The mentality of rape victims is wonderfully portrayed--poignant and painfully accurate. Please read this book. As for the sex scenes, I like that for once, ... morekink and other things are portrayed accurately and with the proper mindset (none of this "take me against my will" shit--more like "this is the mindset I am in, this is what makes it different"). The only thing is that at this point in the novel, especially near the end--it's really hard to reconcile why Kiyo is even still in the picture.
review 2: so good!!! SPOILERS!when Leith did what he did! I couldn't believe it! I was so angry at him. and Kiyo! how dare he stand in her way after what Leith did to her? I was so happy for Dorian interfering. I don't know if it sounds cold or even cruel, but I was so glad for what he did. I was even more glad when she accepted him, he hesitated. he cared for her well-being and hesitated out of love. yet he had no qualms on killing Leith for what he'd done to her. And Jasmine! I still think she's crazy, but she still offered to fight for Eugenie and make them pay for what was done to her. Even though Jasmine totally hates Eugenie. that's how it should be between women. No woman should ever have Togo through that. EVER!. :-) less
