review 1: Again, a solid sequel in an amazingly well-written series. Given the subject matter, I keep expecting to be underwhelmed by tropes and stereotypes and "unexpected" plot twists, but Richelle Mead keeps giving exactly what we should be getting: a well-written, feminist-friendly novel that discusses issues in a real-world way. Intersectionality abounds, political intrigue, sex, kink, and yes, beautiful fairies. It's everything you wanted from Merry Gentry and didn't get.Iron Crowned is a bit more grandiose than the first two novels, because the sheer amount of political Otherworld interplay is necessary to further the plot. Eugenie as Storm King's heir is definitely coming into her powers at this point. And yay, we get Dorian. And Dorian sex scenes, which are always lovely... more. The love triangle is actually enjoyable in this series because it's NECESSARY FOR THE PLOT. But Kiyo lovers--be warned for a punch in the stomach at the end ok? I like that Richelle Mead has done her research in terms of fairies and fantasy creatures as well--there's a lot of unexpected lore in these novels, which is great in a genre filled with vampires and werewolves. KEEP READING!
review 2: I've been enraptured by this series, and the author's unique magic structure, world building, and political undercurrents. It's been a gorgeous and thrilling ride. However, this is the point of the series where things start looking a bit... Laurell K. Hamilton. The main character is starting to degrade into just thinking with her pants, imo. I mean, romance is wonderful, don't get me wrong, but I hate seeing a female character lose their intelligence over something so banal. It's too close to real life, and depressing to watch. At this point, I am reading the series in the hopes that the author regains her repsect for her own character, and puts the steel back in her spine. less
