review 1: A great achievement and a thrilling book to read. What an era - America veers close to national vegetarianism as the price of meat skyrockets in 1973! Jimmy Carter was not that all that he pretended (pretends?) to be! The sad triumph of Hank Aaron! Patty 'Tania' Hearst! Nascent terrorism! The Moonie and EST phenomena! The fall of Saigon! Who would Jerry Ford choose as a running mate in 1976 to replace Rockefeller?! And, most importantly, the fracturing of the liberal consensus that characterised the Republican and Democratic parties and the slow rise to dominance of the new Right, heralded by Goldwater and fully formed in Reagan. However, a book of this depth and quality suffers enormously when the source notes are maintained on-line rather than in the book's back pages wh... moreere they well and truly belong. But don't let that put you off what is otherwise a fabulous book.
review 2: Definitely worth the time to read, and I'll read the next volume if there is one. "Before the Storm," Perlstein's book on the Goldwater nomination and campaign, impressed me more, but that just may be because I was in my 20s during the events of this book, so it wasn't all new to me. I hadn't paid any attention to the 1976 Republican convention, though, so I didn't know what a howling mess it was (Nelson Rockefeller on the floor grabbing signs from Reagan supporters and ripping them in two!) less

He is a great writer. 802 detailed pages of a time not so long ago that seems lifetimes ago.
